One of the churches in town (the one I grew up in if you must know) has regular radio commercials. The pastor tells a semi-interesting story and ties it into some religious point. They're usually nice little ads just deep enough to make you think a little bit. I shall paraphrase this morning's ad: A couple on their honeymoon (he actually names the local couple btw) check into their hotel room. All they find is a couch, tv and bathroom. So they sleep on the couch and wait until morning to complain to the manager. The manager goes to a door in the room and opens it to reveal the bedroom. The purpose of the story is that we may have great things waiting for us - we just have to open the door. But I was yelling at the radio - "Who doesn't know what a freaking hotel suite is!!" Couldn't get beyond the idiot couple that #1spent the first night of their honeymoon without a bed, #2 didn't call the front desk right away, #3 were so limited in their world experience that they didn't know what a hotel suite looked like. My 9-year-old knows the difference. *headsteeringwheel* How many people at that church probably checked over that script? How many people were there during the recording of it? Why did no one catch that? I will tell you - because no one in this town bothers to travel and possibly broaden their horizons. Sheesh! I guess I should just be thankful that I've traveled and lived beyond a 100 mile radius of Jonesboro. My officemate and I had a good laugh about it at least.

I drove with some friends to Little Rock yesterday. One of our high school friends is in town from Manchester, England so a bunch of us met up for dinner and drinks. We couldn't pass up seeing her. There were about 20 of us there. We had a great time. We ended up at a club with a band that plays mostly old Prince stuff. Very appropriate for us (Class of 89!!). I'm so thankful that we could all have such fun together even after 20 years. Though next time we've got to do that during the weekend. I would have been much happier crashing at the Courtyard Marriott two blocks away instead of driving 2.5 hours late at night. But the ride home was pretty hilarious. Cassie and I got to laughing so much at one point that we both got the hiccups. I think we were delirious . I'm very thankful Shea was driving. I got home around 1:30 a.m. and fell promptly asleep. It was very hard to get up this morning. I think I will head to the vending machine soon for a Diet Dr. Pepper. But it was completely worth it.
Madelyn was in her first pageant last weekend. She's been begging me to let her do one since she was 4 years old. This one was raising money for a scholarship fund (in memory of my friend's son who died in November). And it wasn't a glitz one where they wear makeup, hairpieces or any other fake stuff. It was completely laid back so I gave in. Madelyn had a great time. She was the only contestant in her age group so she won the crown. She got to dress up and hang out with a bunch of other girls so she was thrilled. I do love this picture we had done while we were there. It's so Madelyn. We also got pictures made with her new tiara (which she wore for the rest of the day - even outside to play). So hopefully, that will begin and end her pageant career on a very positive note.
Thanks to Jaimilee at U Count photography! I love her pictures!
I hope everyone has a great weekend and a Happy Easter for those who celebrate it.

I just spent a lovely lunch break catching up on my LJ reading. I stayed offline for most of the weekend. Madelyn and Jeff are on their way to Fort Worth right now to visit family during spring break. So I wanted as much Madelyn time as possible this weekend. Saturday was a dreary chilly day so Madelyn and I went shopping and visiting. She was very frustrated at the weather man who predicted sunny skies. We rented Madagascar 2 Saturday night. It was a cute movie. We had such a good time I completely forgot about going out to pick up my copy of Twilight. I went to bed at 10:30 but woke up around 3:30 am with a feeling that I had forgotten something. When I realized it was the just DVD party, I could relax and go back to sleep. Sunday turned into a gorgeous sunny day so Madelyn spent time outside with the neighbors. They were cute as they played in the sandbox and taught themselves tricks on the swing set. Madelyn and Emma were proud that they could get up and switch seats on the double seat swing while it was swinging. Then we had a mini marathon of "Suite Life On Deck" on Disney channel cuddled up on the couch. I watched Mamma Mia as I packed for their trip. Besides the fact that half that cast couldn't sing, I liked it. I haven't seen the play so I had no idea what to expect other than ABBA music. I'm glad I rented it.
I'm not entirely sure what to do with myself this week. I'll have lots of TV to distract myself tonight. Looking forward to watching Gilles, Melissa and Shawn dance. I'm also interested to see if Ty can keep up his improvement. I'd love to see him get really good and blow everyone away. I'm really anxious to watch TLC tonight . From the Jon & Kate Plus 8 previews, it looks like they're going to talk about all these separation rumors. And Little People, Big World is supposed to have some drama. I'm rooting for Amy - she needs to kick Matt's rear end for being a big selfish jerk. Yeah - I know - I'm way too involved. I'll also have my Sheldon and Barney fixes tonight. Yay! I'll have to take a sleeping pill to get to sleep. I don't like it when Madelyn isn't in the next room.
Oh! I get my new computer on Wednesday. Dell had a really good deal on a desktop and monitor. I got the monitor on Saturday which just sits on my desk teasing me. I also got scrapbooking software that I'm itching to play with. So that should get me through my last night without Madelyn. She'll be back on Thursday.
I guess that's all of my news. This week better go by faster than last week. Here's hoping...

Backstory - I give blood every 56 days. I've given blood since I was 17 but didn't give regularly until a few years ago. My Dad died of a bleeding ulcer back in 2004. In the ICU, he was pretty much gone but they kept putting blood into him to try and save him. I have never forgotten that. The Red Cross can have my blood/plasma/etc. whenever they need it. So I was scheduled to give last week but I had a low-grade fever so I called and cancelled. My husband is also ready to give again. I keep telling them that he'll have to just be a walk in since his schedule is so crazy right now. But they just won't accept that. They have been calling non-stop to reschedule me and schedule him. When I got back home on Saturday after shopping, I checked the phone and they had called every freaking hour. They called that evening but I didn't pick up since we were eating. Then they called my cell phone one minute later. That just pushed it to the point of ridiculous for me. Harrassment isn't going to get them more donors.
Back to this morning - They called my cell phone. I'm at work people! Not supposed to be on my cell phone. I thought by pushing a button that I was hanging up but apparently it picked the call up. I called out to my office mate that the Red Cross would not leave me alone. Then realized they were still on the phone. So I said hello and the lady was still there. She asked if they had been calling me too much. Well, duh, yeah. Every hour is a bit excessive. So she apologized and said that she knew I would come in (I always do, dammit). She made a note so they wouldn't call so much. I told them that a reminder call when I could give again was fine. I realize they're always short on blood. But geez! Nice way to start a Monday. But I'm about to go to a meeting with some of my favorite people on campus so it's going to get better shortly. Speaking of which - I better get going. : )

I’ve been bad again about posting. But honestly, there hasn’t been much to tell. This past weekend was pretty awesome though.
( Saturday )
( Sunday )
So that was my lovely weekend. It’s about to get cold again tonight. But it won’t be bad and hopefully will be one of the last cold snaps. Madelyn has her last game to cheer for tonight. I’m glad I won’t have to sit on bleachers twice a week anymore. But I met some nice people over the past few weeks so I’ll miss talking to them as much. Madelyn will also get to rejoin her art class which makes both of us very happy. She’s missed her art teacher terribly. I hope everyone is having a good week. Love you guys!!

I actually got to watch all of the Academy Awards last night. I either forget and have something else planned or let my family bully me out of watching it. But I was determined this year especially since Hugh Jackman was hosting. A few of my favorites and WTF? moments

ASU lost power and computers this afternoon so we're up at our church. I'll hopefully come home to a house with electricity this afternoon.
Posted via LiveJournal.app.
We ventured out to my Mom's house. She's without power too but has a fireplace. It's much warmer. Lots of trees down and power lines laying around - sad and scary. The word is that it might be Friday before we have power again. I think ASU has power so I'll actually be glad to go to work tomorrow. Thanks for all the good wishes. I'll hopefully be back in touch tommorrow.

I'm iced in...no electricity...bored 9 yo...yuck! It may be days until we have power. I may try to get up to work to see if they have power. On the positive side, I can finish reading Lord of Misrule. Yay!

It’s been such a nice quiet day at work. The students have the day off. Just one more reason to look forward to summer.
This weekend had its ups and downs. I had a Southern Living at Home party on Saturday. I haven’t always had much luck with parties like that. My most supportive friends have been miles away in other cities. But I’ve been lucky to reconnect with some childhood friends and make some awesome new ones in the past year. We had a great time together and I earned a bunch of free stuff (yay!). Madelyn had a friend over to play after the party so she was happy. On the way back home after dropping off Madelyn’s friend, my friend Cassie called to tell me that a high school friend was in town and they were all together and I had to get my butt over there. This was at 10:00 p.m. mind you. I’m usually well on my way to sleepy-time by then. But I went over there anyway and we had a blast. There are lots of crazy pictures posted on Facebook. There aren’t many of me because I didn’t have makeup on and I threatened pain and dismemberment to whoever took a picture of me. But I relented a couple of times.
I went to church as I usually do on Sunday. Madelyn was a ballgirl at the ASU Women’s Basketball game that afternoon. It was an exciting game but we lost. The refs were horrible. But the girls on the other team were good sports so it wasn’t too frustrating.
Onto a cheerier topic, I’m very excited about all the movies coming out this spring. I’m going to the movie theatre almost every weekend in May. There were two I found on IMDB.com that I didn’t know about - Night at the Museum 2 and All About Steve . Both look like they’ll be worth seeing. What movies are you guys most excited about?
I’m looking forward to a peaceful week. I don’t have much on the calendar which is rare. I’m going to enjoy it since things pick up again next week. But for tonight, I’m going go home, eat something bad for me and watch Big Bang Theory (Sheldon rocks!) and How I Met Your Mother (NPH rocks more!). *wants to go home right now*

We drove to Memphis last night to see a play at the Orpheum Theatre. I hadn’t planned on going. But I get emails from the Orpheum and they had certain floor seats on opening night on sale so I took them up on the deal. My Mom has season tickets and wasn’t going to be able to go on Saturday so she traded in her ticket and went with us. Of course, she’s my usual babysitter and the high school kids we know wouldn’t be able to stay out on a school night until we got home at 11:00. But we lucked into finding a college student at our church. She’s a sweet girl and Madelyn felt comfortable with her. I was a bit nervous since she was new and our home phone wasn’t working (whole other story). But we left a cell phone with her and the numbers of a couple of our neighbors. Side note: I’m very thankful that we are friends with our neighbors. I realize that doesn’t happen a lot anymore so I feel lucky.
Since it was Tuesday night, the theatre wasn’t packed. What was funny was that the discounted seats we got were over on the far right about half-way down. There were about 10 rows of us packed into the right half of the section. Everything behind us and to the left was empty. We were all laughing that we could tell exactly where the discounted seats stopped. Right before it started, we spread out to the empty seats so we could all be comfortable. I love it when theatre-goers can be friendly and get along.
The play was pretty good. Synopsis from wikipedia ( under the cut )
I loved the actor who was the narrator (called “Man in the Chair” in the program) – John West. He had impeccable timing and was a joy to watch. The lights go down at the beginning and leave you in the dark for a bit. Then you hear the narrator’s voice. He starts by talking about how much he loves the feeling of excitement as the lights go down. It’s a funny monologue – all the while you’re still sitting in the dark. Then the lights finally come up. He gets out a record of his favorite musical from 1928 – The Drowsy Chaperone. When he starts the record, the play takes place in his apartment. He comments throughout the play and even wonders in and around the “play” actors. There were points where I was bored (very long tap dance sequence). And since they were spoofing old plays and over-the-top acting there were some spots that were completely annoying. But we laughed a lot and it was a good theatre experience overall. There wasn’t an intermission since the play usually only runs 90 minutes. They came closer to two hours but it was still easy to sit through it. And getting on the road earlier than usual was a bonus. I think I’ll keep my
